Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (2003)

Episode Overview

For five years, the Yazzie family has been residing in a mobile home lacking running water, heat, and only partial electricity. At just 13, Garrett, their son, decided to tackle the heating issue by using his ingenuity to design a solar heater and a water heater. He crafted these devices from recycled materials, including an old car transmission and 69 aluminum cans, harnessing solar energy in the process. His innovative approach embraced Navajo principles of sustainability and recycling. As a result of his remarkable invention, Garrett became the first Navajo to win 9 out of 10 Discovery Channel Young Scientist Awards.
